Southport Flower Show Supporting Emerging Talent
Mature students Helen Schaffer and Paul Richards both from Myerscough College, have won the Southport Flower Show Garden Design Competition, which has been sponsored by Lakelovers, a company providing quality holiday homes in the beautiful Lake District. Each student will be given the honour of creating their gardens at the four day event from 17th until 20th August 2006 as well as winning £1000 each in prize money. The theme for this year's Flower Show is water and that was the brief given to the students for the garden design competition.
For Helen, from Brierfield in Burnley, it is her second consecutive win in the Southport Flower Show student competition, having just completed a three year foundation degree course in garden design. This month she begins a one year top up degree and her winning entry is based around water and reflections. Helen has created a rectangular mirror-clad pool and a skeleton clock that is powered by a water wheel. Blues, whites and metallic colours are used to interpret reflections and the water theme.
Fellow winner Paul from Halsall in Ormskirk, entered the competition for the first time this year and is busy studying a Foundation Degree in garden design. He has already set up his own garden design business.
On hearing of his competition win Paul said: "I am obviously delighted. I decided on a career change having been a self-employed consultant for six years and that was work, but garden design has always been a passion. I live and walk my dog by the Leeds-Liverpool canal and that inspired me to create my cool, calm and contemporary water themed design which uses a canal as a central feature and provides a modern interpretation of a classical Italian garden."
Once again, Southport Flower Show is keen to provide a platform to promote emerging garden designers work which will surely be applauded by this year's celebrity show opener, maverick garden designer Diarmuid Gavin.
Southport Flower Show's reputation as the largest independent horticultural event continues to focus on broadening its appeal to the family market.
For guests purchasing these special tickets, there is an additional incentive to dress up as there will be a Best Dressed Lady competition. For Ladies Day tickets telephone 01704 547147.
