Secrets & Tips from Yesterday's Gardeners
Just imagine having your very own expert from yesteryear, a gardener who could unlock generations of wisdom. A gardener who took pride in sound cultural practices, was practical and forward-looking and who could give you nuggets of information grounded both in science as well as common sense.Well now you can. A new book from Reader's Digest, 'Secrets & Tips from Yesterday's Gardeners' combines the best of yesterday and today.
Do you know, for example, that by planting alliums under roses you can keep greenfly away? Do you know what to look for when buying plants? Have you mastered the often complicated problem of when to water? This book is full of tips and practical advice about a wide range of subjects - each chapter has tips and secrets boxes (as if your great-grandfather was leaning over your shoulder and offering up advice as you garden).
I really like the layout of this book. It has an excellent depth covering everything from planning a traditional garden with flower beds and borders to the vegetable and fruit gardens. Issues such as covering a sunny trellis, growing new roses from old and achieving colour and scent are typical of the hundreds of items of advice you will find.
In the chapter on gardening basics you will find information on everything from the life of plants and feeding the soil to sowing seeds and planting out as well as advice on tools and planning your time in the garden.
There is a strong organic theme running through the whole book which I liked. If you are concerned about the use of herbicides and pesticides you will find in each chapter pragmatic alternatives - tried-and-tested solutions from yesteryear.
There are 320 pages of clear and concise information with good colour plates and step-by-step pictorial instructions. Within its pages you will find time-honoured propagating and tending techniques to help you create a beautiful and productive natural garden today.
On sale from 30th September 'Secrets & Tips from Yesterday's Gardeners' is on sale in hardback at £26.99. Published by Reader's Digest, it really is one book your gardening bookshelf should not be without.
