The English Roses
In his captivating book, 'The English Roses', David Austin takes us into his fascinating world as a rose breeder. Here is the authorative voice of someone who writes with a lifetime experience of his subject, but his style and prose is never "lofty" - his love of roses and his passion simply glows through every page and it is very infectious.
David began breeding English Roses some fifty years ago by hybridising Old Roses with Modern Hybrid Teas and Floribundas. They combine the form of flower and rich fragrance of Old Roses with the repeat-flowering of the Modern Roses. The results created a horticultural stir and his famous rose gardens at Albrighton are now home to over 800 varieties attracting visitors from all over the world.

Richly illustrated, with images from some of the world's finest garden photographers, 'The English Roses' is a sumptuous book which will appeal to both the dedicated rose aficionado or the amateur enthusiast. David not only explains the principles behind the creation of his English Roses, in particular, but also charts the origins and nature of roses and their symbolism down the centuries in general.
The book contains a gallery of amazing 'Redouté' style photograps including fifty five new English Rose varieties. He takes us through the fascinating developments that have been taking place in recent years and explores with us such subjects such as fragrance - which he considers to be 'the other half of the beauty of a rose' - analysing the delicious scents found in the English Roses.
He explores the various uses for planting thereby further stimulating our appetites and includes a most useful section on growing which will be particularly helpful to the amateur enthusiast.
This really is an essential book for the gardener. It's the kind of book you want on your coffee table so you can pick it up and drool over the sumptuous illustrations and plan ever more inventive ways to use English Roses.
