The Winter Garden
It's all too easy to forget that we have a garden in winter which is sad because winter should be just as entertaining and magical as the rest of the seasons. So it was with interest that I read Val Bourne's latest book, 'The Winter Garden'. At last here is a book that gives us inspiration for getting as much out of the garden in winter as we do for the rest of the year.
Winter can be forgotten and lacklustre but Val’s book gives the reader plenty of ideas to change that and to enable you to get as much out of your garden from the cold months as you can in the summer.
She suggests trees, shrubs, seedheads, berries and evergreens that will bring your garden to life in winter and her selections include plants and trees which offer interesting shapes and textures as well as rich colours and early flowers for ground, containers and walls. She also shows how to create eye-catching areas using pebbles, gravel and stone, wood and bronze.
The book is filled with planting ideas and suggestions covering texture and substance, leafy fillers, hips, haws and berries, the flowering canopy and a look at structural features. It’s written in an easy and interesting style and her enthusiasm shines through every chapter.
Val is a well known plantswoman, writer and broadcaster who contributes regularly to The Daily Telegraph gardening pages. She has a totally organic garden in Oxfordshire where she specialises in growing hardy perennials and cottage garden flowers.
Certainly 'The Winter Garden' will stimulate your interest in gardening through the winter and help you make the most of your garden so that it can shine, even through the darkest months.
