New Illustrated Guide to Native Plants
Not only are native plants perfect for adding colour and drama to your garden but they also play a vital role in sustaining and preserving the natural biodiversity of a local area, offering insects, birds and other animals essential food and shelter.
In 'Starting out with Native Plants' Charlotte de la Bédoyère has brought us a delightful and beautifully illustrated book which will help gardeners identify, find and cultivate these enchanting wild plants, whatever the size of your garden.
The first part of the book has everything you need to know about getting started – from collecting seeds to preparing the ground. The second part looks at how to grow meadows (including wetland, cornfield and woodland) and then goes into the main section of the book, where you will find a beautifully illustrated directory of the most commonly found native plants.
The complete listing at the back which catalogues all the plants native to Britain, giving size, habit, flowering season etc., will provide gardeners with an instant and valuable source of reference for their plant heritage.
The colour plates are clear and well defined which is important when you are trying to identify plants. I found just leafing through the pages an absolute joy and I was filled with excitement to go out and identify my own little plot to start cultivating some native plants.
“Starting out with Native Plants” is published by New Holland and goes on sale on 5th March 2006, priced at £14.99. Purchase online with Amazon and save 40% - £8.99 (as going to press) - click here for more details.
