Allotment Days - Capturing the spirit of the allotment
Allotment gardeners share the secret of a common aim - enjoying the freedom and exercise which working an allotment brings - not to mention the added bonus of having fresh produce on your table.
In his book "Allotment Days" Matthew Biggs captures the spirit of allotments and introduces us to some of the characters who know that their allotments are far more than a place to grow vegetables. From the pumpkin that ‘sups’ six pints of beer a day, to the children who’ve discovered how to eat their greens by growing them themselves, this fun book offers a unique insight into allotments and their owners.
There are simple tips about starting and working an allotment and some of the characters share snippets of advice with the reader but the attraction in the book for me is the variety of allotments and gardeners covered and perhaps that sense of sharing - a peek into other gardeners' lives.
Allotment gardening offers the simple pleasure of eating food straight from plot to pot, without any hint of plastic packaging. It opens up a refreshing world of sharing, laughter and friendliness, which anyone with an allotment will instantly identify with in the book.
Matthew Biggs has been a professional gardener for over 20 years and studied at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He started broadcasting with radio phone-ins and has since appeared in many TV gardening programmes. He is now a regular panellist on Gardeners’ Question Time.
"Allotment Days" is published by New Holland and will be available from 19th March 2007 and is priced £9.99, or purchase online at Amazon for £5.99 (as going to print, excluding p&p).
