John Brookes Garden Design Course
John Brookes MBE is one of the world's most influential garden designers and both garden design students and gardeners avidly read his books.
His latest book, 'John Brookes Garden Design Course' is another inspirational workbook which takes the reader from the basics of simple surveying, through the author’s celebrated use of a design grid, to detailed styling and planting design.
With enrolment figures for landscaping and garden design courses at an all time high, garden design has never been so popular and this latest workbook will certainly be valuable. The book is divided into four sections: Elements of Good Design; Context and technique; The Design Process and Specialties.
However, the book is not just for the aspiring student landscape gardener or professional garden designer. It is also suitable for garden owners wishing to make the most of their gardens. It is practical and easy-to-follow, has numerous case studies showing exactly how each project has been planned and realized and perhaps above all is a summation of his philosophy combined with clear practical information of what needs to be considered when designing a garden. Each chapter is illustrated with images, and features the original plans, as well as photographs and sketches of gardens and garden features designed by John.
There are some excellent illustrations and a clever question and answer section. He writes in a conversational easy style which is pleasant to read and stimulating. This is a comprehensive book which covers a lot of areas other books do not. For example, how to find a reliable contractor, the tools needed for designing a garden, preparation of the brief and drawing technique.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it is informative, entertaining and practical. The book is published in May 2007 by Mitchell Beazley and is £20.00 in hardback. Pre order online at Amazon for £14.00 and save 30% (as going to print - excluding p&p).
