How to Plant your Allotment
By Caroline Foley
Allotment gardening continues to rise in popularity and there are waiting lists for most allotment sites across the UK. Allotment gardening offers the wonderful pleasure of eating fresh food straight from your plot and also offers a perfect escape from the stresses and strains of modern living.
‘How to plant your allotment’ by Caroline Foley will certainly be a useful guide on the bookshelf if you have your own allotment or are considering starting one. One of the most important aspects of gardening on an allotment is working out what to put where. In her book, Caroline covers everything from choosing your allotment, through to harvesting the fruits of your labour and sharing her tips of the trade to help you build up confidence.
The layout is clear and easy to follow and she uses good illustrations. I also liked the fact that she shows you how to use plans to help you plant and what to sow when. The book starts with the history of allotments and the vital things you have to consider when deciding on a plot. She then moves on to assessing the main considerations such as aspect, wind, slope, soil etc before taking you through what plants grow best and where.
There is also a chapter of clever tricks and a chapter of allotment plans as well as a glossary of gardening techniques from sowing seeds to protecting your crops.
Caroline is a freelance gardening writer and author who contributes articles to several magazines. 'How to plant your allotment' is on sale from 14th May and published by New Holland. It’s a handy size and will certainly make a good companion to anyone thinking of starting an allotment as it is packed full of information.
