Introduction to the wonderful world of Orchids
Orchids are one of the largest and most diverse plant families in the world and today they are becoming more and more popular. For years many people considered them to be difficult to grow and expensive, however, nothing could be farther from the truth as a new book by Michael Tibbs points out.
'Orchids' is a practical guide to the care and cultivation of these wonderful plants. Michael introduces the reader to the fascinating world of orchids, giving essential information on their structure, growth habits and characteristics as well as offering practical advice on buying, choosing and caring for your plants.
As more of us discover these lovely plants – there are a staggering 25,000 species available – there is definitely a need to learn more so it is good to see such a comprehensive and well thought through book coming to print. Michael is a distinguished orchid grower and breeder who lectures widely and judges orchids at shows as far afield as South Africa, Japan and the USA as well as the UK. He has managed one of the best known orchid collections in Britain and has run his own nurseries in South Africa.
The book is full of tips on growing and cultivation which will help you get the most out of your orchids, and if you want to enter your orchids for a show then the book also includes everything you will need to know.
The second half of the book covers the major orchid families from Zygopetalums to Paphiopedilums, introducing you to useful information which will help you choose the right plant for the right climate conditions. There is also a section on pests and diseases.
If you are a beginner the book will provide commonsense advice on getting started and the essential things you need to know to care for your plants. If you are a more experienced orchid grower the book will makes an excellent companion on your bookshelf.
