The Hillier Gardener's Guides
Chelsea not only saw the award of a 60th Gold Medal for Hillier but also marked the launch of their new Hillier Gardener's Guides in collaboration with David & Charles.
The Hillier Gardener's Guides series sets new standards in gardening publishing, with a unique mix of practical advice and inspiration, all backed by Hillier's 140 years of experience in the gardening trade.
The first two guides, launched alongside "Hillier Plant Names Explained", are "Shrubs" by Andrew McIndoe (pictured above) and "Plants for Small Spaces" by Clive Lane.
Andrew is series consultant for the Guides and is Deputy Managing Director of Hillier. The designer of the Hillier Chelsea exhibit since 1989 he has an unbroken run of Gold Medals.
Shrubs are the backbone of the British garden and in his book Andrew gives plenty of advice on the right kind of shrub to plant where and for varying conditions. He draws on his 30 years experience with plants, gardening and gardeners and the result is a useful, practical guide for almost any situation.
In 'Plants for Small Spaces' Clive Lane looks at the practicalities of buying plants for small gardens and spaces and gives ideas for difficult situations such as hiding eyesores and creating privacy. Clive is Administrator of the Cottage Garden Society and is a respected writer on Cottage Garden planting.
Both books offer the reader ideas for successful planting and structure, foliage effects and situations as well as effective choices for seasonal colour. Layout is practical and easy to follow and the A4 size is easy to handle whether indoors or out and especially if you want to take them as a reference to the garden centre with you.
There will be more books following in the series and Reckless feels sure that they will be an instant hit.
