The Gardener's Wise Words and Country Ways
It is that time of year when we are thinking of presents for the gardener in our life and personally I just love it when someone buys me a gardening book. I can never have too many and I really do cherish the ones which contain simple, old-fashioned advice.
In her book, 'The Gardener's Wise Words and Country Ways', Ruth Binney, brings to us a unique and captivating collection of collected wisdom, proverbs and superstitions. The book is in a handy A5 size, which is appealing in itself, and the layout is cosy and no-nonsense. There are no colour or black and white plates, just really nice drawings which I also found appealing.
Famous gardening names such as Gertrude Jekyll and Vita Sackville-West share their knowledge but you will also find advice from ordinary gardeners, whose experiences come alive in their sayings, prose and poetry.
It's a little gem of a book that you can dip into when the mood takes or purposefully go to if you need an answer to a gardening problem and covers both flowers and vegetables.
Ruth Binney has been collecting old sayings and traditional advice for some 50 years, since her father first advised her that potatoes should be planted on Good Friday. Gardening has been part of her life since childhood and her love of the earth and all things floral comes through in the pages of her book.
'The Gardener's Wise Words and Country Ways' is published by David and Charles and is priced £9.99. A fantastic stocking filler and yes just that little piece of nostalgia as well. Purchase online at Amazon.co.uk for £7.68 (saving 23%) excluding P&P, as going to print.
