Gardening in tune with nature –
Sticky Wicket by Pam Lewis
I like authors who speak to me through their books as though I was the only one that mattered. It's a special technique that some writers have - a one-to-one with the reader, a feeling of exclusivity. I like it even better when through the dialogue I am able to share with the writer their experiences and make them as my own.
In "Sticky Wicket" Pam Lewis combines an unrivalled sense of colour and a clear and detailed knowledge of plants with a great respect for nature. This is her second book, (her first was , Making Wildflower Meadows) and she describes entertainingly and frankly, the ups and downs of the development of her wildlife garden. She describes her inspiration and incentive, her design and planting ideas and how she linked with the immediate environment to holistically manage her garden to be in tune with nature.
I loved her no-nonsense approach to the challenges she faced together with her husband Peter, who sadly died last year. For Pam the book is as much a testament to his achievements as well as her own.
Illustrated by Andrew Lawson the book also contains Pam's own visual record of the garden. It is a book for every nature loving gardener - a sheer delight. Readers' will identify with the trials and tribulations and learn quite a bit along the way too. There is an excellent compost heap recipe, advice on attracting wildlife and birds and even a look at the positive side to weeds. A manual of best practice and a really good read.
Sticky Wicket is published by Frances Lincoln in hardback at £20.00. Publication date is 30th June 2005. Buy online and save with Amazon .....
