English roses are remarkably adaptable plants and they can be used in a variety of ways. One of the most effective ways of buying roses is to buy bareroot plants which can be planted from November to April. (See our article on buying and planting bareroot roses).
The majority of David Austin's customers buy their roses as bareroot plants and one way you can help your new rose establish itself - ready to offer you the very best of blooms for the following season - is to use David Austin's Rootgrow.
Rootgrow is the organic approach to establishing roses and contains five species of mycorrhizal fungi that are native to the UK. The mycorrhizal fungi are a large group of fungi that are believed to have originated 400-500 million years ago. They have developed a very intimate relationship with the root system of plants supplying extra water and nutrients to the plants in return for the supply of sugars.
Using Rootgrow at planting time means that roots of the new plants quickly become established and colonised by the mycorrhizal fungi. Rootgrow can benefit your new rose plant by:
- helping the root system to develop
- helping to overcome rose replant sickness
- improve the disease resistance of the plant
- improves water and nutrient uptake
Rootgrow is available in 60g sachets (enough for 3 bareroot plants) & costs £2.50 plus £1 p&p from David Austin® at davidaustinroses.com
* Many thanks to all readers that entered our competition. The winner of the vouchers goes to S Clarke, from Cambridge.
