Exciting Plans for Chelsea Garden from Leeds City Council
Leeds City Council will be exhibiting at Chelsea Flower Show 2006 in a bold and imaginative initiative which is set to highlight the success of the city that leads nationally in commerce and regeneration. The objective of the design will highlight the industrial heritage and current prosperity of Leeds and demonstrate the strong partnerships between the City Council and local entrepreneurs.
Leeds has a long traditional commitment to providing high quality parks and gardens, placing great importance in maintaining these through a highly skilled and dedicated workforce. The City Council currently exhibits at several regional shows and garden festivals and supports local communities in their entry to the 'In Bloom' competitions.
The Leeds Parks and White Rose Office Park Garden will be rebuilt in a business park development in central Leeds after the show. The garden is sponsored by David Aspin of White Rose Office Park and will be exhibited in the Show Gardens category.
As well as using old and new materials the form of the garden has been inspired by the shapes of garment templates from Leeds historic clothing industry. Standing in front of the garden to the left the view will be framed by a low Photinia hedge, which flows around to a re-creation of a fragment of an old mill wall. This will be constructed using old style brick. On the right-hand side as the wall turns the corner it will be superseded by a stainless steel wall evoking modern Leeds architecture. Here the innovative patterning of the steel surface recalls water, reeds and sky, which make up Fairburn Ings nature reserve.
A focal point to the rear of the garden will be a garden shelter a bold structure made of reclaimed cast iron supports with a single piece of glass for the roof.
The split-level water feature, in which the modern glass sculpture sits, represents the importance of the River Aire and the Leeds Canals in the development of Leeds while at the same time providing a reflection of the garden as it changes through the seasons.
While specialists will be engaged for certain features of the garden, the bulk of construction and all the planting, will be undertaken by staff who work in the Parks and Countryside Service.
We feel sure the Leeds garden will invoke a lot of interest at Chelsea.
The Leeds City Council Garden is sponsored by Munroe K.
