RHS Honours Champions of Organic Gardening
RHS honours champions of organic gardening, orchids and community horticulture Alan and Jackie Gear, pioneers of the science and practice of organic gardening, will be awarded Honorary Fellowships by the Royal Horticultural Society at the gardening charity's annual awards, presented at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Gala Preview on 3 July.
They are among 16 leaders recognised for their contribution to the world of horticulture, including orchid scientist Dr Henry Oakeley, Pamela Schwerdt and Sibylle Kreutzberger, custodians of Sissinghurst for 30 years, and Jim Buttress, a champion of community horticulture for the past 25 years. Oakeley, Schwerdt, Kreutzberger and Buttress receive the highest accolade in British gardening, the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour.
The breadth of the RHS awards is revealed in the list of Veitch Memorial Medal winners, who include Dr Allen Langton, for work on disease resistance in narcissus, and the development of energy saving methods in greenhouses, Dr Norman Looney, President of the International Society for Horticultural Science, and Aljos Farjon, the world‚s leading conifer taxonomist.
Many of the RHS award recipients share their expertise as members of the RHS‚s voluntary committees, whose work in turn the RHS shares with the gardening public through its four gardens, 17 shows, web site and publications, and via the media.
The awards will be presented by actress Penelope Keith and RHS President Peter Buckley.
