RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

College Designers Bring Fresh Inspiration

Once again Campus gardens at Hampton Court really catch the eye. 'Immaculate Square' (Gold) from Guildford College Merrist Wood Campus is an interpretation of a garden square brought economically to a smaller size. Designed by Alison Sloga the garden offers us a cool and peaceful area in which to relax under a canopy of striking box-headed Acer campestre.

Kent Chalk by Hadlow College

Hadlow College (Silver-Flora) really push the bounds of garden design with their Kent CaCO3 (chalk) (pictured above). You could view this garden from a number of aspects and it was certainly unsual. Designed by graduates of Hadlow College (Fern Alder & Heidi Harvey) the garden has the feel of being carved directly from a chalk landscape complete with turquoise pool. Its dominated by a chalk face which provides a backdrop for moving images and soundtrack. There is a wild feel about it and it certainly sends out the message about our shrinking and important ecological habitats and particularly those in Kent.

Banrock Station - A wetland journey

Anglo Aquarium Plant Company Ltd in conjunction with Capel Manor Horticultural College, organize an annual competition for its landscape design students to produce a plan for a water garden. The winning entry is built at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The winner this year was 'Banrock Station - a Wetland journey' (pictured above) by Loi Man and Jonathan Martin of Living Gardens. The planting evokes the emphemeral landscapes of the Australian wetlands and was awarded a Silver-Gilt.

Oaklands College used the theme of vanishing rainforests and global warming for their 'The Front Line' (Bronze) (pictured below) designed by Jan Always and Alison Down. It alerts us to the disappearance of urban front gardens to hard surfacing which comes at a cost to the environment. Duchy College 'New Takes & Old Takes' (Bronze) designed by Alistair Rivers brings us another front garden and shows us how we can choose plants to enhance the front garden space and show off our gardening skills.

The Front line

St Edmund's School, Canterbury, encouraged five GCSE pupils to design their garden 'The Music Garden' (Bronze) helped by two members of staff and the school's own RHS trained horticulturist. This is a delightful garden - a lovely place to relax, full of purple pink and white.

'Time Line' from Capel Manor College (Silver) designed by Emma Dawson, is inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy's work 'Time' - this simple courtyard garen is bisected by a meandering stream. The garden is designed and constructed by students from the college.

A garden to convert the couch potato

City College Brighton and Hove created a lot of interest with 'A Garden to Convert the Couch Potato' during preview day (pictured above). Designed by Rachel Venia Woodgate and Cressida Knapp the garden was awarded a Silver. It's quirky and different and is designed to get in touch with your soul appreciating the goodness that comes from self-cultivation.
