Borough of Macclesfield – 'The Allotment Garden"

The final gardenYou couldn't help being drawn to The Allotment Garden because a brilliant display of Dahlias said simply 'come and look at me'. Macclesfield Borough Council won a well deserved Gold for their 2004 entry.

The allotment took you back in time and for those of us old enough to remember them in their hey day it was a lovely nostalgic trip. A garden intended for inspiration and enjoyment, it was full of traditional and indeed adventurous vegetables and herbs, with some of the humour and individuality of Macclesfield's own allotments.

The Municipal entries at Tatton obviously have the help of 'many' hands as they bring in teams to help get the show gardens ready. Macclesfield Borough Council staff had worked with their local allotment societies to help in designing and preparing the garden. It was a magnificent effort.

Getting sponsors is one of the most vital tasks for any garden designer who wants to exhibit at a major show. Macclesfield had the support of all manner of sponsors ranging from plant societies such as the National Chrysanthemum Society and National Dahlia Society to seed companies such as Halcyon Seeds and W. Robinson.

The idea behind the garden was to inspire more people to grow a few lettuces or cabbages and leave a little space for wildlife.
