Area based - Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire
Most exciting garden designed - Two come to mind. A modern roof terrace garden at the BBC centre in White City, London where the budget was tight and the need for creativity high and a large country garden in Cape Town, South Africa where I was able to use spectacular native plants that I had only seen surviving in glass houses before.
What inspires you about each garden that you design? - The client. Many clients initially profess to being unsure what they want or like. With a bit of delving it's amazing what you can learn and a real pleasure to see the client's individuality come to life in their garden.
Is there a plant that seems to be consistently used in your designs? - I strive to make every garden unique and often do so by selecting plants that are just a little bit different.
How do your clients cope with looking after their garden once you and your team have left? - Like many other garden designers, I leave written instructions where needed. I also happily revisit for a follow up chat. In the first place though, making sure the garden fits the lifestyle and horticultural ambitions of the client is very important not least to ensure both a happy client and healthy garden in the future.
What is the average time scale for a typical garden? - 2 to 4 weeks on average for City and Town gardens, longer for larger country residences.
Advice to would be designers - Never stop learning, be this from others in the industry, garden visits or additional courses. You can never know enough!
