Yorkshire – from wild to soft - a delightful county
The county of Yorkshire is Britain's largest county and for the visitor enthrals with an ever changing landscape which is both wild and rugged yet soft and soothing. From the wild North York Moors to the scenic serenity of the Dales, the county beckons the gardening enthusiast with a number of fine gardens in the best gardening traditions.

The magnificent Castle Howard, (pictured above) designed by Vanbrugh, is the finest private residence in Yorkshire a 1,000 acres of delightful gardens and woodland. Ray Wood has many rare botanical trees and shrubs and the restored waterworks of the South Lake, Cascade, Waterfall and Prince of Wales Fountain will delight and entertain. Visitors to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, (pictured above) owned by the National Trust, are never disappointed by this beautiful Abbey garden which is a world heritage site. It is one of the finest surviving monastic sites in the UK and containing a rare example of a Georgian green water garden. As you wander through the elegant avenues with their temples and cascades there is always something interesting that catches the eye. www.nationaltrust.org.uk
Harewood House sits comfortably in its Capability Brown landscape. The stunning gardens include beautiful lakeside and woodland walks, a Rock Garden, Walled Garden and restored Parterre Terrace. www.harewood.org
Newby Hall and Gardens contains 25 acres of award-winning gardens containing many rare plants. The famous double herbaceous borders are quite stunning with the garden divided into ‘rooms’ which delight and entertain at every turn. There is something in the gardens for all seasons. The formal gardens include the Autumn and Rose gardens, there is a Victorian rock garden and a tropical garden. www.newbyhall.com
Bolton Abbey has some of the most stunning landscape in the country. The Priory is surrounded by some 80 miles of footpaths which lead you into tranquil and delightful vistas. www.boltonabbey.com

Burton Agnes Hall (pictured above) delights with its topiary yew and the old walled garden containing a maze, jungle garden and campanula collection. This delightful Elizabethan Hall contains many treasures. www.burton-agnes.com

No gardening trip to Yorkshire would be complete without a visit to RHS Garden Harlow Carr. There are gardens through time, a streamside garden, alpines, a woodland and wildflower meadow and new contemporary herbaceous borders. RHS website
Temple Newsam is one of the great country houses of England. The birthplace of Lord Darnley (who married Mary Queen of Scots) it has 1500 acres of beautiful Capability Brown parkland with formal and wooded gardens.
Other gardens in the area include Norton Conyers, the Walled Garden at Scampston, Sutton Park and the one acre delightful York Gate Garden.
