Creating a hanging basket - a beginners guide

There is nothing wrong with walking into a nursery and buying a complete hanging basket! But there is great satisfaction, if you chose your own plants and make your own (and it often works out cheaper!).

What you need.....

  • A basket - they come in may different varieties these day's - the choice is yours. Make sure it either has a plastic liner inside or you'll have to purchase a separate liner to enable to the soil to maintain moisture.
  • Plants - a good idea is to get inspiration from the hanging baskets available at the garden centre. When choosing, check the height and spread of the plants, to make sure they will suit. (Most labels will say - 'ideal for baskets'.)
  • Compost - A wide selection available, check that the bag says suitable for hanging baskets.
  • Water
