Remove Aphids without using Chemicals

Despite the onset of Autumn there are still plenty of aphids around our gardens and the roses are still playing host to colonies of greenfly. These insects feed off the sap in plants and can often transmit viruses that will attack the plant and sometimes kill it.

If you are particular not to use chemicals in your garden and want to be environmentally friendly then there is an alternative to deal with these irritating insects which you could try.

It's an idea I remember using as a child when my mother used to throw the washing-up liquid over the shrubs and rose trees. It's simple and effective and harmless to the environment - simply Soap Flakes and any leaves containing oxalic acid (such as rhubarb).

Soap Flakes are made from pure soap and are fully biodegrable. Simply boil three pounds of the leaves in three litres of water Strain, and add one ounce of Soap Flakes dissolved in one litre of warm water.  Add to a gardeners spray bottle and spray onto plants affected by aphids (try a patch test first).  This natural alternative will remove the aphids without harming your plants.

Soap Flakes are available from supermarkets and hardware stores for around £1.49.  For further information and uses, visit www.soap-flakes.co.uk
