A rose for whisky lovers
Whisky fans and gardeners alike will be interested in a new rose, which has been named after a single malt Scotch whisky – The Balvenie Rose.

The rose, a red floribunda variety, has been named in honour of the distillery's latest release, The Balvenie Rose 16 Year Old Single Malt, which celebrates the long and romantic history of Balvenie Castle, the annual rent of which was fixed at a single red rose in 1460.
The Distillery, on Speyside, was built in the shadow of the now ruined Balvenie Castle, once owned by the Fair Maid of Galloway, Margaret Douglas.
Following a rebellion of the infamous Black Douglasses against the King, all the family’s titles and estates were forfeit to the Crown. The King, however, was so taken with Margaret’s beauty, that he reinstated her at Balvenie Castle for the unusual annual rent.
Rob MacPherson of The Balvenie Distillery said: “This wonderfully romantic story of Margaret Douglas and the single rose inspired us to create The Balvenie Rose single malt. We’re so pleased with the result that we decided to also name a rose in honour of this historic tale.”
The Balvenie Rose Single Malt is a limited release of just 426 bottles but The Balvenie Rose plant can be purchased from specialist growers www.worldofroses.com at £5.95 for a bareroot and £9.95 for a potted rose.
