A Fruitful Day for UK Rose Growers and Retailers

Thirty five growers and retailers recently attended the HTA’s British Rose Group’s Rose Promotion Day at Notcutts Garden Centre in Solihull to look at the current status of the UK Rose Industry, current promotional plans with Roses UK and identify future opportunities to increase sales.

Chaired by HTA Business Development Advisor Neville Stein attendees were presented with the latest Garden Industry Monitor (GIM) data on rose sales showing how sales are subject to greater fluctuation than other nursery stock. The largest outlet for rose sales continues to be garden centres and retail nurseries with over 50% of the market share.

Data reveals that a typical rose purchaser is likely to be a woman aged 65 plus with the greatest potential market being the 35 year-old plus female marginal gardener. Ideas for bringing the rose to the attention of this new generation of marginal gardeners were discussed.

HTA Director of Business Development Tim Briercliffe commented: “It was encouraging to see so many growers and retailers passionate about roses at this event. The input from participants was immensely valuable and set the scene to take the promotion of roses forward in the future. We will now be working on a detailed promotional plan to increase rose sales.”

Commenting on the event Jane Matthews of Aylett Nurseries Limited, St Albans, said: “I found it an extremely useful and motivating day which encouraged dialogue between growers and retailers within the industry.  It also gave us new ideas of ways in which to promote roses within our garden centre, and fulfill the needs of our customers more efficiently.”

For further details about the current activities for promoting the rose including the Rose of the Year competition, the rose marquee at Hampton Court Flower Show and the Rose Locator web resource see http://www.rosesuk.com
