How green are Britain's Gardeners?
Just how concerned are we about the planet? In a bid to answer this question PlantforLife, launched in 2004 by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) recently carried out some research and has come up with some interesting facts.*
They have now launched a report of their findings after the nationwide survey set out to discover how green are Britain’s gardens and gardeners? The report, which also contains some simple and relevant steps from garden expert Chris Collins to help gardeners improve their green credentials, reveals that we are all concerned about our environment with the main concern being climate change.
94% of respondents agreed that flowers, plants and trees are important to our built environment with 93% agreeing that domestic gardens have a part to play in helping protect the planet. 69% recognise the aesthetic benefits of plants compared to just 9% recognising the environmental benefits.

41% are concerned with the loss of trees and hedgerows while 38% of respondents have reduced their water usage over the last year.
Almost 50% of respondents were willing to pay more for locally produced plants and one in five said they would pay as much as 20% more for the locally grown equivalent plant. The provision of local authority green waste schemes appears to have a positive impact on composting with 80% of respondents having such a scheme.
