Landscape and Horticulture Skills win support at Chelsea

The skills of the landscape and production horticulture industry received strong support from Skills Minister, Phil Hope MP, during a visit to RHS Chelsea Flower Show. He commended the work that employers and organisations in the industry are undertaking to improve training and skills development.

During his visit he was accompanied  by Director General of the Royal Horticultural Society Inga Grimsey. They met some of the landscape designers of the future including John Court (pictured below), an apprentice with Cardiff City Council's Parks Department and Peter Davies, a National Diploma student in his second year at Pershore College, together with David Feaver, Head of Horticulture at the College.

John helped work on Cardiff's 'Garden in Time' which celebrated  the TV programme Dr. Who. Peter (pictured below) worked on the 'Upwardly Mobile Garden', designed using mobile planted containers so that planting could be easily moved  depending on the season.

Mr Hope MP, said: "It is fantastic that key organisations including the RoyalHorticultural Society (RHS) and British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) are working with the Sector Skills Council, Lantra. Together they are raising skills across the industry and helping to build a top class workforce for the future in this hugely important sector of the economy.

"As in so many areas of skills and innovation, the UK is a world leader - gardens, gardening and horticulture are no exception.  We have for centuries excelled  in landscape gardening.  The design and creativity on view here is simply out of this world."
