Gateshead gardeners show off their gardens

The gardeners of Gateshead and Tenants of The Gateshead Housing Company are being given the chance to show how good their gardens are in the 2008 Summer Garden Competition.

The competition is open to Gateshead residents, schools, commercial and industrial premises and religious grounds, with three area competitions covering the borough.

There are 12 classes to enter - ranging from 'Best kept large garden' and 'Best kept backyard', to 'Window box' and 'Best new entry'.

Additional prizes, in each relevant class, will be awarded to the best entry from a tenant of The Gateshead Housing Company.

Entry forms for the competition are now available from housing offices, Gateshead Council libraries and leisure facilities across the borough.

There is no fee to enter and there's the chance to win B&Q prize vouchers, trophies and attend the award presentation evenings. The closing date for entries is late June and judging will take place in late July to early August.

Bill Fullen, Chief Executive of the housing company said, "As well as

spending over £1m a week on improvements to homes we want to help improve the look of neighbourhoods as well - giving people a genuine pride in where they live. And what better way to show off estates than with our tenants having pride in their gardens by taking part in this annual competition."

The competition is organized and supported by Gateshead Council, The Gateshead Housing Company, B&Q and In Bloom Committees.
