Renowned Planstman to talk at RHS crocus day
A special talk by renowned plantsman and author, Janis Ruksans, will be held at RHS Garden Wisley on 26th February, 2008, as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Crocus Open Day.
Janis will be flying in from Latvia to give the talk to provide insider knowledge on crocuses in the wild, many of which are in the current RHS trial.
The Open Day runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm and will mark the beginning of the spring season. With over 2000 crocuses on trial at Wisley, every visitor will be wowed by the wonderful splashes of colour from these lovely little plants, which were once more famous and valuable than the tulip.
Janis will be accompanied by Brian Matthew, David Stephens and Roger Holland – covering crocus taxonomy, cultivating crocus and The Bowles Connection. All visitors are encouraged to bring examples of crocuses for interest or identification.
The Crocus Open Day is part of a series of events organised by the RHS Trials Department, designed to bring gardeners closer to the wonderful world of plant science.
Every year the Trials Department, with the help of affiliated plant committees, conduct over forty trials of flowers, fruit and vegetables across the UK, and are an important part of the RHS’ scientific work in advising gardeners. RHS Trials are unbiased and their results and findings are available for all gardeners in the UK.
Only those plants that are considered outstanding for garden use receive the Award Garden Merit (AGM). The AGM symbol* tells gardeners the plant has been recommended by the RHS following rigorous assessment by experts and is a sign that gardeners can have confidence in when buying plants.
