Clifton Nurseries, London’s oldest garden centre, is returning to RHS Chelsea Flower Show after a 6 year absence, with Rachel de Thame’s garden for LK Bennett.
Rachel has designed her first ever garden for Chelsea, which will be built by Clifton Nurseries, who will also supply plants and materials.
The garden will be within the small ‘Urban Garden’ category and is sponsored by the private bank SG Hambros Bank Limited. Inspiration will be drawn from LK Bennett’s collection of elegant painterly, graphic and paisley floral prints. The garden marries strong contemporary design with softness and opulence in the planting, capturing the romance of an English country garden in an urban setting.

The central focus of the garden will be a dramatic, yet simple, tall steel sculpture, counterbalanced by 3 tiers of roses cascading down in terraced planters. Shrub roses, peonies and a range of perennials fill the beds. The seating area consists of English Oak, machined precisely to fit into the curved profile of the feature wall.
The various elements of the garden will be brought together at Clifton’s Landscape premises and fine tuning of the garden by Rachel will take place during April to allow the team to arrive at Chelsea with all the ‘bugs’ ironed out: “Having built it once and then dismantled it, the re-build at Chelsea should be straightforward - at least that’s the theory”, said Tad Paluchowski, Clifton Nurseries M.D.
No stranger to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Clifton Nurseries have been gold medallists 5 times and winners of ‘Sloane in Bloom’ in 2006.
